    Welcome to the Professional Development Programme in Maritime Welfare (MARI-WEL) 

    The World Maritime University and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust put together the world-leading experts in the field of seafarer rights, maritime regulations, and welfare issues, to design the first comprehensive programme concerning topics and issues that relate to seafarer welfare. MARI-WEL has been designed to meet the needs of anyone who works with or interacts with seafarers, both onboard and on shore. 


    As an open-access continuing education programme offered through e-learning, registered participants can access all programme materials at any time including video lectures, self-study activities and self-assessment tools. The programme provides three modules:

    • Module 1: International regulations, conventions, codes, and seafarers’ rights
    • Module 2: Psycho-social and occupational health relating to seafarers
    • Module 3: Crew & resource management and land-based seafarer welfare

    Open-access Enrollment for the full MARI-WEL programme is available from June 25 2021. For a fee of 100USD, an online examination is available to receive a Certificate of Completion for the Professional Development Programme in Maritime Welfare, issued by the World Maritime University.     Seafarers' Trust

    The ITF Seafarers' Trust was established by the ITF Executive Board in 1981 as a body with charitable status under UK law. The Trust financially supports organisations that directly provide welfare services to seafarers, acting as a catalyst for positive change in the maritime community, support long-term programmes that improve maritime workers’ health and welfare through direct and normative change. Its funding comes from the investment income of the ITF Seafarers' International Welfare Assistance and Protection Fund and from capital funds held by the Trust itself. Since its launch in 1981, the Trust has provided some US$200m to support seafarers' welfare around the world.

    ITF - International Transport and Workers Federation

    The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) is a democratic, voluntary and affiliate-led federation of 670 trade unions, in 140 countries, representing 19.7 million working men and women in all transport sectors. The ITF represents the interests of transport workers' unions in bodies such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The organization also informs and advises unions about developments in the transport industry in other countries or regions of the world, and organise international solidarity actions when member unions in one country are in conflict with employers or government.

    WMU - WORLD MARITIME UNIVERSITY

    The World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden is a postgraduate maritime university founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
